Though only 10 to 12 hands high, the Caspian is a horse, not a pony. The breed can be traced by 5,000 years in ancient Persian writings. They were thought to be extinct for 1,200 years, but were rediscovered in 1965. There are less than 1,400 Caspians in the world today. First Caspian mares and stallions were brought to the U.S. in 1994.
